When I was still very small my mother put her hand over mine and showed me how to stroke our collie’s soft ruff.  Good boy, pretty dog; she said, ” Be gentle, Be kind.”  “I have a col-yie,” I would tell everyone as the fast waving of his tail parted my soft blonde hair.  ” I remember he wore four of the whitest stockings on his feet.  He looked like he had just stepped out of the paint bucket that whitewashed our picket fence.  He had pretty collie markings, the color of honey and a plumed tail that moved back and forth like a paint brush. His name was Macintosh, the Scottish for  ‘raincoat.’

Ever since my childhood my mother and I have always had a heartfelt endearment for all dogs.  Not a more reliable baby sitter could have been found.

Macintosh loved my brother and I with all his heart and soul.  My life with dogs was just beginning.

Debbie was appointed as the American Kennel Club columist for the Bouvier des Flandres and Tibetan Spaniel over a 12 year period.  Her feature articles have appeared in many of the world’s most prestigious magazines, including Dog World, the AKC Gazette, and Hoflin Publications.

She was also singled out to edit and rewrite the popular breed books by the late publisher Bill Denlinger.

Her own show dogs have been featured in Dog Fancy and Dog News as well as other canine magazines.

Consecutively four of her Bouviers were number one in their breed on the American Kennel Club circuit while her Tibetan Spaniel and her Akita were int the Top 10 nationally for much of their 10 year show careers.

Throughout her life she has worked tirelessly in purebred breed rescue of both dogs and later with horses, forming one of the earliest humane placement groups for Bouviers.

Horses became my best friends when I was only four years old.  I would sit in their stalls and talk with them for hours, sharing all my hopes and dreams.  In their own special way, they always answered me.  I have read every horse story ever written.  I drew horse pictures on every paper in view.

I pranced around the yard pretending I was riding a racehorse.  In school when my teacher ask me to recite the U.S. Presidents in order, she nearly fainted when I called off the names of all the winner of the “Kentucky Derby.”

Later in life, Debbie took her lover for horses to heart, creating The Gentle Farm, a sanctuary for lost and abused horses, dogs, goats, ducks, and chickens.  Early each day hours before she even steps into the grooming shop, she tends to God’s creatures who have found their way.  Sparta resident Clarence G. Priser used to love to visit here and bequeathed funds to care for the animals before he died.
